Will cartoons help smokers quit?

AN anti-smoking organisation is taking a radically different approach to persuading Australians not to light up.

In a dramatic departure from the gruesome images used in existing campaigns, Quit Victoria has employed lighthearted animated videos with a cheerful tone.

The cartoon series, entitled "Triggers", is made up of four short videos that suggest ways smokers can curb their cravings.

The campaign identifies Saturday night as a key moment when smokers trying to quit may fail. Source: Supplied

So will the campaign actually work, or is it just silly?

The first begins with a voiceover saying: "Ever noticed how some things trigger your smoking? Coffee, parties, smoking buddies, stress and after meals.

"Ask yourself, what are your triggers? Everyone's different, so you need to work out your own ways of dealing with them. Thinking ahead and being prepared is the key to quitting for good."

The ads will be carefully targeted across all platforms, with online adverts pushed out around the time of morning coffee breaks, radio ads played on Saturday nights before people go out, and images placed in the back of taxis, where passengers might face stress over traffic.

Quit Victoria acting director Craig Sinclair said: "We found that more than 80 per cent of smokers have tried to quit. Most have had at least eight attempts.

"It can be hard to stay quit due to addiction to nicotine, living with a smoker, negative withdrawal symptoms and these common triggers.

The "coffee trigger" animation will be targeted to coincide with mid-morning work breaks. Source: Supplied

"We want smokers to understand what their triggers are so they can be prepared to manage them."

He said the cute drawings will stop people from "self-exempting" because they don't look like an actor, and instead they will identify with the circumstance portrayed.

The anti-tobacco group's research shows that having friends who smoke is the trigger people find hardest to resist. Women are most likely to pick up a cigarette when under stress, while men tend to crave cigarettes during work breaks.

The organisation hopes the campaign will be imitated across other states and at an international level.

But it insists the new style does not negate the impact of plain packaging and graphic images currently used to deter people from smoking.

"There is no question that in our history of creating anti-tobacco ads, the most confronting need to continue," said Mr Sinclair.

"These campaigns have been remarkably successful, but 15.1 per cent of Australians still smoke.

"We need a two-pronged approach, with hard-hitting attempts to motivate people but also things like this to assist smokers in quitting.

"It's a key departure from previous campaigns, designed to help them quit and see it as a process, not just one step."

ISIS claims Sony cyber attacks

Cyber attacks ... Islamic State hackers have apparently taken their fight online, claiming responsibility for attacks on Sony music and gaming sites. Source: Supplied

JAPANESE entertainment giant Sony says its online music and gaming sites have come under attack by a hacker group that also claimed there were explosives on a plane carrying a senior company executive.

The company said on Monday that a US commercial aircraft carrying the president of Sony Online Entertainment had to be diverted after a warning online about the explosives.

"The PlayStation Network and Sony Entertainment Network have been impacted by an attempt to overwhelm our network with artificially high traffic," the company said on its PlayStation. Blog, adding that "no personal information has been accessed".

A spokeswoman for Sony in Tokyo said a person or group using the Twitter name @LizardSquad had claimed responsibility for the attack.

"Today we planted the ISIS flag on @Sony's servers," @LizardSquad tweeted said with a photo of a man carrying the Islamic State flag.

Attempts to hack gaming networks aren't new, but this is the first time that it appears attacks have occurred due to political or religious reasons.

The feed Lizard Squad feed also contained reference to a bomb on a plane.

Separately, John Smedley, president of Sony Online Entertainment, tweeted: "Yes. My plane was diverted. Not going to discuss more than that. Justice will find these guys."

American Airlines Flight 362, bound for San Diego from Dallas, was redirected to Phoenix, according to the company.

More than 150 million accounts were registered with Sony Entertainment Network as of September last year, the company said.

Teen party mum’s ‘condoms, booze’

Party mum allegedly went too far ... Elaine Mullen blames her 15-year-old daughter for the condoms and alcohol. Picture: Easton Police Source: Supplied

MANY mothers want to make sure their 15-year-old daughter's party is a great affair but, if proven, Eliane Mullen went way too far.

Mullen, from the town of Greenwich, Connecticut, is charged with 10 counts of risk of injury to a minor, including offering alcohol to teenagers and at least one condom to a teen about to have sex with another, Connecticut Post reported.

Easton Police Department allege that Mullen bought a bottle of Smirnoff vodka, a six-pack of Heineken and a bottle of Fireball Whisky for the teens to consume in the basement of her home.

Mullen is also accused of giving a condom to two teens about to have sex.

Mullen told the newspaper that it was not her fault.

"I have a condom in my nightstand and sometimes my daughter comes in and plays with it," Mullen told the newspaper. "She must have come into my bedroom and taken it from my nightstand."

She admitted events got out of control.

"The whole thing got out of hand," she said in a telephone interview.

"My daughter invited two friends over for a sleepover, and all of a sudden kids just kept coming in, boys and girls that were not supposed to be there."

Police became involved when they were contacted by the parents of one boy who had been to the party and arrived home extremely drunk, saying that he had drunk at least half a bottle of vodka and two beers. The parents took him to hospital for treatment,.

"I did not coordinate the party, my daughter did — I had no clue she brought alcohol," Mullen said..

Mullen also thought it was her daughter who provided the alcohol.

"I thought she was going to Marshalls because she had a gift card, but she went to the liquor store instead and then she hid the bottles in the back of my car," Mullen told the paper.

Johnson takes aim at commentary box

Mitchell Johnson has again proved he is no slouch with the bat, smashing a six into the commentary box during Australia's ODI against Zimbabwe.

WHEN Mitchell Johnson is playing cricket, nobody is safe. Not even the commentators.

Johnson literally left his mark on the Harare Sports Club in Zimbabwe after belting a massive six that shattered the commentary box window during the opening match of the one-day international tri-series.

FOLLOW ZIMBABWE V AUSTRALIA IN OUR MATCH CENTRE

Supersport commentators Neil Manthorp and Pommie Mbangwa played it remarkably cool given how close they'd come to being the latest victims of a Johnson thunderbolt, with Manthorp continuing to commentate while Mbangwa wiped shards of glass off his chest.

Johnson's six was one of 15 hit by Australia's batsmen as they brutally dismantled the Zimbabwe bowling attack, with the tourists finishing on 6-350 thanks mainly to Glenn Maxwell (93 off 46 balls) and Mitch Marsh (89 off 83).

Porn stars: squeeze our boobs for charity

A GROUP of Japanese porn actresses are preparing to have their breasts squeezed by fans for 24 hours this weekend for a charity event loosely translated as "Boob Aid".

The nine adult movie stars told local media on Monday they could barely contain their excitement about the "Stop! AIDS" campaign event — which will be televised live — but asked, perhaps somewhat optimistically: please be gentle.

"I'm really looking forward to lots of people fondling my boobs," Rina Serina told Tokyo Sports.

"But I would be very happy if you would please be delicate."

The event, the 12th since its launch in 2003, will be broadcast on adult cable television, with punters donating to the anti-AIDS campaign in exchange for a feel.

It comes after sexist heckling of a Tokyo assemblywoman hit the headlines, highlighting old-fashioned views towards women that still permeate Japanese society.

"I never thought my boobs could contribute to society," added the ponytailed Serina, apparently unaware of any contradiction.

Fellow porn actress Iku Sakuragi had no qualms about being groped by hundreds of pairs of hands.

"It's for charity," said the 21-year-old.

"Squeeze them, donate money — let's be happy."

Lawmakers from Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's ruling party sparked a public outcry in June when they subjected Tokyo assemblywoman Ayaka Shiomura to sexist taunts, shouting "Why don't you get married?" at her during a debate on motherhood.

Japan has one of the lowest rates of female workforce participation in the developed world and a lack of childcare facilities, poor career support and deeply entrenched sexism are blamed for keeping women at home.

The 24-hour "squeeze-a-thon" begins at 7pm (Eastern Standard Time) on Saturday and is backed by the Japan Foundation for AIDS Prevention.

How you’re being fooled by Ikea

Ikea have used their store as a setting for a time travel experiment, involving the hypnotism of shoppers.

IKEA'S success is no accident. The Swedish furniture giant is messing with your head — and you love them for it.

It's a psychological trick used by everyone from pick-up artists to big corporations, a trick that was notably used by American founding father Benjamin Franklin.

Way back in the 18th century, Benjamin Franklin wanted to get on the good side of a rival legislator, so he asked to borrow a rare book. The legislator obliged, and the two became lifelong friends.

It turns out, if you do someone a favour, you'll like them more. That's because your brain subconsciously alters your thoughts and feelings towards that person to rationalise your behaviour — "I did this person a favour, therefore I must like them".

We value Ikea products more because we've had a hand in creating them.

By forcing customers to "finish the job" and build the furniture themselves, Ikea tricks you into valuing its products more, according to consumer psychologist and Gruen Transfer panellist Adam Ferrier.

Mr Ferrier is the head of strategy at advertising agency Cummins&Partners. He said the "Ikea Effect", a term coined by researchers from the Harvard Business School in 2011, is now being used by all kinds of brands to bring consumers on board.

"As soon as you do something for someone else, you post-rationalise that action and begin to like that person more," Mr Ferrier told the audience at the Xerocon conference last week.

"The reason why that's important today is all communications can now be interactive. If you're in small business it's even more important, because you can build your business by asking favours of your clients — and they'll like you more for doing it."

According to the 2011 study, when instant cake mixes were first introduced in the 1950s, housewives were resistant — the mixes made cooking too easy, undervaluing their labour.

"As a result, manufacturers changed the recipe to require adding an egg," the authors write. "While there are likely several reasons why this change led to greater subsequent adoption, infusing the task with labour appeared to be a crucial ingredient."

Coke asked customers to buy a bottle for a friend instead of themselves. Source: News Limited

Coca-Cola is another brand which used this concept to great effect. Its 'Share a Coke' campaign was arguably one of its most successful ever, and played on the same idea — rather than asking people to buy a Coke for themselves, it invited people to buy one for a friend.

The reason psychological tricks such as these are so important, according to Mr Ferrier, is that consumers don't respond to rational messaging. "Actions change attitudes much faster than attitudes change actions," he said.

"It's almost impossible to get someone to change their behaviour through rational argument — if you've ever gone to a psychologist and they laid you down on the couch and sat behind you and asked you to speak about your mother, they were wasting your time and taking you for a ride.

"That type of psychology, based around coming to some insight about yourself and then changing your behaviour as a result, has never been proven in science. The relationship between insight and action is vast."

Mr Ferrier said most psychologists — and brands — had moved on instead to trying to encourage people to approximate the behaviours they wanted to see.

"Having an insight doesn't mean you're going to act on that insight," he said. "Knowing you're an a**hole and the reasons why doesn't stop you being an a**hole."

COGNITIVE DISSONANCE

Referring to the psychological tension caused by holding two conflicting beliefs, the principle is illustrated by Aesop's classic fable 'The Fox and the Grapes', in which the fox, unable to reach a bunch of grapes, convinces himself he doesn't want them anyway — they're sour.

THE IKEA EFFECT

Coined by researchers from the Harvard Business School in their 2011 paper, the Ikea Effect shows that when people construct products themselves — from flatpack furniture to origami — they come to overvalue their creations, no matter how poorly made.

THE ENDOWMENT EFFECT

The Endowment Effect means people value more what they already have — it's why salespeople are always so keen to put things in your hands (think car test drives). In general, people are thought to value something around twice as much if they already own it.

Knights’ $2m post-Tinkler budget cuts

All the highs, lows and big blows from round 24 of the NRL Premiership.

The extravagances of the Nathan Tinkler era will soon be a thing of the past at the Knights. Source: News Corp Australia

NEWCASTLE are in the throes of slashing as much as $2 million from their operating budget for next year following the extravagances of the Nathan Tinkler era.

But CEO Matt Gidley says Knights players won't bear the brunt of any of the cost-cutting.

EELS STUN, SHARKS DONE, UPSETS AND UPROAR

While he didn't want to speculate on an actual savings target, Gidley admitted the focus since the NRL took control of the club after Tinkler relinquished ownership has been to bring costs significantly down.

"I'm not going to put a figure on it but we have spent the past three or four months getting the business model right and looking very closely at our budgets," Gidley said.

"There has been a real focus on getting our costs down.

"But that won't impact directly on the players. We will be spending the salary cap limit which could be as high as $6.4 million next season if the NRL agrees to roll in marquee player allowances which is a strong possibility."

It's understood Knights staff across the board have been asked to take pay cuts but the biggest single saving was made when the club didn't have to renew coach Wayne Bennett's $1 million plus contract.

There has also been a conscious effort to employ from within wherever possible with Rick Stone's coaching staff expected to include only one outsider — former Hull KR coach Craig Sandercock.

It's understood the NRL has entrusted Gidley will the job of reigning in the costs, that had blown out to extraordinary levels under Tinkler, to ensure the club is a viable proposition to a potential buyer down the track.

Gidley said he is currently working hard to try and secure a long-term major sponsor but admitted times were difficult in the Hunter, particularly with the downturn in the mining industry.

Meanwhile, winger Akuila Uate has been ruled out for the rest of the season after undergoing surgery on a knee injury.

New pregnancy diet: before and after

EXCLUSIVE: Men and women are being urged to trim down even before they conceive a child under new guidelines on what to eat during pregnancy and feed your child.

The Early Life Nutrition guidelines developed by six Australian and New Zealand experts are designed to prevent childhood obesity and allergies.

The experts claim the right diet in the first 1,000 days of pregnancy (including 3 months before conception) and the first three years of a child's life have a profound impact on the child's health.

"Most women know what not to eat during pregnancy, but not enough parents recognise the things they can do to reduce their child's risk of disease later in life," said University Sydney's paediatric specialist Professor John Sinn.

Under the plan men and women are urged to lose weight before they conceive and take iodine and folate supplements.

Almost two out of three women of child bearing age are obese or overweight and this increases their chance of gestational diabetes and of their child growing up overweight.

Once pregnant women are urged to ensure they don't gain more than 9-18 kilograms in weight (only thinner women can gain 18 kilograms).

"Planning, expectant and current parents should be informed of the significant role of good early life nutrition in ensuring the long-term health of their children," Professor Sinn said.

However, they should not diet while pregnant because studies show the offspring of women who were pregnant during a famine become obese later in life, the experts warn.

Pregnant women should continue taking iodine and folic acid supplements and eat oily fish like salmon or tuna several times a week.

To prevent allergies in their children they are advised not to avoid peanuts or other allergens unless they have an allergy themselves.

The experts warn high protein diets (over 20% of total energy) should be avoided during pregnancy as they may lead to increased birth weight.

Women should aim for 8.5 serves of breads and cereals each day and have a fat intake of no more than 20-35 per cent of their total energy intake.

Excessive weight gain in the first half of the pregnancy should also be avoided because it leads to babies with higher birth weight and body fat.

Once their baby is born women are advised to breast feed for as long as possible and introduce solid foods once their baby is aged 17 weeks to help combat the development of allergies.

They should feed their toddlers full cream milk only after 12 months of age but offer a wide variety of nutritious foods while limiting sugar sweetened and fruit juice drinks and added salt, sugar and excess saturated fat.

The country that surprised us all

It's a peaceful life in Iceland, home to the blue lagoon. Source: ThinkStock

WITH bullets flying and chaos reigning in all corners of the globe, one surprising country has managed to come out on top.

Iceland has just been named the world's most peaceful place by the Global Peace Index 2014 produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace, a think tank that conducts an annual study of 162 countries now in its eighth year.

It's no mean feat in a world that has become more violent in the last seven years with a "notable deterioration" in global peace due to conflict in Gaza, Syria, Iraq and Russia, among other places.

The study takes into account 22 indicators that gauge the amount of violence or fear of violence in a society including factors like the number of murders, jailed population, access to weapons, violent crime and military expenditure.

Iceland was followed by Denmark, Austria and New Zealand, with Switzerland, Finland, Canada, Japan, Belgium and Norway rounding out the top ten.

Australia ranked number 15 with negative score of its involvement in conflicts and the number of women in parliament.

Just 11 countries in the world ranked low for all forms of conflict, The Independent reports, including Switzerland, Japan, Qatar, Mauritius, Uruguay, Chile, Botswana, Costa Rica, Vietnam, Panama and Brazil.

Syria was the least peaceful country this year, replacing Afghanistan. South Sudan experienced the biggest drop while Iraq, North Korea, Pakistan and Russia all featured in the bottom ten.

IEP founder and executive chairman Steve Killelea said a number of things have contributed to a deterioration recently including the global financial crisis, Arab spring and rise of terrorism.

"Given the deteriorating global situation we cannot be complacent about the institutional bedrocks for peace: our research shows that peace is unlikely to flourish without deep foundations. This is a wakeup call to governments, development agencies, investors and the wider international community that building peace is the prerequisite for economic and social development," he said.

All this violence also has an economic cost, which reached over $10 trillion in the last year, twice the GDP of Africa. Mr Killelea said this has led to very real costs in the global economy which is equivalent to around 19 per cent of global economic growth in the last year.

"To put this in perspective, this is around $1,350 per person. The danger is that we fall into a negative cycle: low economic growth leads to higher levels of violence, the containment of which produces lower economic growth."

Zambia, Haiti, Argentina, Chad, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Nepal, Burundi, Georgia, Liberia and Qatar were the countries named most likely to deteriorate in the two years ahead.

The best hidden Google search tricks and tips

Don't settle for the same results as everyone else. By using a few cheeky tricks you can enhance the power of Google to great effect. Source: www.whoishostingthis.com Source: Supplied

GOOGLE comes up trumps when we need answers but it has the ability to be so much better if you know the right tricks.

With the right searching skills you can get immediate, well-honed results that mean you won't have to scroll through its pages of irreverent results to find what you're looking for. You can tell Google to disregard certain words or phrases, tell it to search within websites or even narrow down your query to things like exact pricing or location.

THE WEIRDEST THINGS SEARCHED FOR ON GOOGLE

Website hosting company whoishostingthis.com has created a great infographic showing how using these hidden tips can unlock Google's extra power and make you a Google guru.

There's a lot of stuff out there on the web so by filtering out all the unwanted stuff you're going to get what you're looking for a lot quicker. You can search exact phrases and find results that have more than one context. It's a bit like asking for a chicken sandwich on Turkish with no butter rather than just saying 'sandwich' and seeing what you get.

Source: www.whoishostingthis.com Source: Supplied

A rather smart feature of Google is being able to pull out information from specific sites so you don't have to go clicking through a rabbit hole of menus and tabs. Also, if you're on the right track but might need more sources then you don't have to go searching for alternative sites, Google does it for you.

Source: www.whoishostingthis.com Source: Supplied

By searching for certain words in the body text of web pages you can fine tune your findings.

Source: www.whoishostingthis.com Source: Supplied

Or, you can easily pull up web results that will be dedicated to exact words in your search but also will have keywords elsewhere on the page. This can help you put subjects into context so if you're looking for an article about something specific about a flu shot, this is a great trick.

Source: www.whoishostingthis.com Source: Supplied

While Google is clever enough to realise where abouts in the world you are searching from and will bring geo-specific results it can still throw up odd websites from different countries. A geographical-based location search is easily executed and is particularly useful if you're searching for something like news for a particular country. Another great feature you might not know about is the ability to find certain file types. You can type in the suffix of, say, a PDF and you'll only see those, which is a great tool for research.

Source: www.whoishostingthis.com Source: Supplied

Here's one for the shoppers. Buying anything online can be a bit of an open ocean with so many websites offering products at different prices. You can lock things down by searching within your budget simply by putting two full stops between the prices. And, if you're one of those people who isn't great at remembering profound quotes or song titles the use of an asterisk will help fill in those mental gaps.

Source: www.whoishostingthis.com Source: Supplied

Not that we're advocating the poor use of grammar but, aside from the examples above, Google doesn't actually recognise punctuation so you don't have to waste time moving your little finger those few millimetres to stick in apostrophes and commas. However, Google does recognise these and can strongly help your search results:

Source: www.whoishostingthis.com Source: Supplied

Right, so now you're got a few extra search moves under your belt here are a couple more tricks you might not know Google could do. From finding the current time in countries around the world, tracking a parcel, converting currency or even telling you your IP address these could be time saving strokes of smartness:

WHEN her husband-to-be failed to carry her over the threshold of their home in practice for their wedding, 116kg Grace knew she had to act.

"He (Dan Newsome) tried to pick me up and just couldn't," Grace Peacock, 21, told Mirror UK.

"He tried to brush it off and asked for a hug instead because he knew it would have got to me.

"And I tried to make a joke about not wanting to be dragged over the threshold but it really upset me."

Picked on all her teenage life due to her weight, Grace could not bare to buy clothes in shops due to embarrassment, instead shopping online.

Size 22 ... Grace Peacock's fiance could not lift her up when she wanted to practice being carried over the threshold of her house on their wedding day. Picture: Facebook Source: Facebook

She rarely went out with friends as they take picture and post them on social media.

"They'd be all over Facebook and I'd be tagged in them so everyone could see.

"I hated that people would be able to see me and knew they'd say 'Blimey, look how big she is!'"

When Dan failed lift her it proved to be the trigger to an astonishing weight loss that now sees Grace weighing just 58kg, a staggering loss of more than 57kg.

She could not buy clothes in shops due to embarrassment, instead going online.

In two years Grace, of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England, has gone from a Size 22 to a Size 10 and feels comfortable to wear a bikini for the first time in her life.

"I feel like a completely different person and, best of all, Dan can pick me up easily!"

Grace began her weight loss by going for long walks with her dogs and she also joined a gym with Dan.

"The first time I got on the treadmill I couldn't even run," she said.

Then, in February last year, she joined weight loss program Slimming World with her sister, Megan Allatt, 23.

To this ... Happy to wear a bikini for the first time. Picture: Facebook Source: Facebook

From this ... Bullied and unable to stop eating. Picture: Facebook Source: Facebook

Slowly but surely Grace's weight began to fall. She went from a Size 22, down to a Size 16 in three months and was hooked. She recorded her weight loss on social media as she got down to Size 14.

"I'd put them up on Facebook and one got something like 2,000 'likes'," she said.

"People posted really nice comments and it really helped me to keep going."

As well as sticking to the diet program, Grace went to the gym four times a week for 5k runs on the treadmill.

Now she says is looking forward, instead of dreading, trying on wedding dresses.

"We bought our first home together a year ago so we haven't set a date yet because we need to start saving again," she said.

"The wedding will probably be in 2016, which means Dan has plenty of time to practise carrying me over the threshold!"

Marrying in 2016 hopefully ... Grace Peacock, 21, and her childhood sweetheart and fiance, Dan Newsome. Picture: Facebook Source: Facebook

‘China wants to take us over’

Extraordinary tirade ... Palmer United Party leader and Member for Fairfax Clive Palmer has said on national TV that China is trying to take over Australia. Source: News Corp Australia

CLIVE Palmer has delivered an extraordinary tirade against Australia's biggest trading partner, describing the Chinese government as "mongrels" who shoot their own people.

In a broad spray on ABC's Q & A, the maverick MP accused the "communist Chinese government" of trying to take over Australia's ports to steal the nation's natural resources.

"I don't mind standing up against the Chinese bastards and stopping them from doing it," he said on Q & A on Monday.

The Palmer United Party leader is embroiled in a legal battle with Chinese state-owned company CITIC Pacific, which has accused the mining magnate of siphoning off $12 million in funds.

Mr Palmer has strenuously denied accusations his company Mineralogy misused CITIC Pacific's cash to finance PUP's federal election campaign.

He said the matter was before the Supreme Court this week and he'd keep up the fight against the "Chinese mongrels".

"I'm saying that because they're communist, because they shoot their own people, they haven't got a justice system and they want to take over this country," he said.

"We're not going to let them do it."

A number of Mr Palmer's political opponents have in the past accused the outspoken Queensland MP of jeopardising Australia's relations with China.

China is Australia's largest trading partner, with two-way trade hitting nearly $151 billion in 2013.

Mr Palmer also told Q&A of his plans to host a self-styled climate change conference at his Queensland resort the day after the G20 summit wraps up in Brisbane.

Mr Palmer claims there are many world leaders who want to discuss climate change at the G20 in November but can't because the issue isn't on the agenda.

He's hoping his counter conference on November 17 will fill the gap and attract a strong crowd to the Palmer Coolum Resort - famous for its dinosaur theme park.

"We'll have international leaders from all over the world and the globe, talking about climate change," he said.

The Abbott government has faced criticism in some quarters for not including climate change on the official G20 agenda, choosing instead to focus on economic growth, trade and job creation.

PUP will next week introduce a bill to the Senate calling for an emissions trading scheme to be set up in case Australia's major trading partners adopt a similar scheme.

It's unclear if Labor supports the proposal, while the government will almost certainly reject it.

"We have to realise that if we want to trade with other countries and they have an ETS, they won't allow our products to enter unless we have a similar scheme," he said.

Mr Palmer's three senators and the Motoring Enthusiast Party's Ricky Muir last month gave the government the crucial votes it needed to abolish carbon pricing in Australia.

Bride brings wedding to her ill dad

A MICHIGAN woman who had been planning a traditional church wedding has changed the venue to an Ohio nursing home so her father with Alzheimer's could walk her down the aisle.

Miriam and Mark Davis, of Canton, married on Saturday at the Foundation Park Alzheimer's Care Center in Toledo.

A beaming Bernard Reeves gave his daughter away as many of the 30-some wedding guests struggled to hold back tears.

The 64-year-old Reeves has advanced-stage Alzheimer's disease.

Miriam Davis tells The Blade that her father remembers who she is, though he rarely talks and can't care for himself. She says her dad is her hero.

Her mother, Marie Reeves, says even though her husband may not have understood everything that was going on, the family felt his presence was important.

Agreement for US troops in Australia

Written By Unknown on Senin, 11 Agustus 2014 | 23.18

Australia has pledged support to the United States to ensure further atrocities are not carried out in Iraq.

New agreement to be signed ... Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop arrives back in Sydney with US Secretary of State, John Kerry. Picture: Bradley Hunter Source: News Corp Australia

US Secretary of State John Kerry is set to arrive in Australia for the annual AUSMIN talks.

AUSTRALIA and the United States will sign a landmark agreement in Sydney today to allow American forces greater access to Australian bases and facilities.

The annual AUSMIN talks will include a signing ceremony for a new Force Posture Agreement that will see 2500 US Marines and dozens of US war planes and warships exercising and replenishing at Australian ranges and bases in the Northern Territory and at HMAS Stirling near Perth.

AUSMIM: US Secretary of State John Kerry arrives

IRAQ: Australia could offer US military support

The talks will also open the way for Australia to become part of America's global ballistic missile shield and will focus on the rising tide of Islamic militancy in Iraq and Syria, the Ukraine and Afghanistan.

As Sydney airport's VIP parking area choked up with a US air force C-17 transport jet, a 747 jumbo, 757 and 737 passenger jets carrying dozens of US officials, security personnel and tonnes of equipment, the talkfest kicked off last night with a dinner hosted by Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and Defence Minister David Johnston for their respective US counterparts John Kerry and Chuck Hagel.

OBAMA/ABBOTT DEAL; New US military facilities in Australia

FIRST TIME: Chinese troops to train in Australia

Following talks with Senator Johnston yesterday (MON) Secretary Hagel assured the world that the US was a "Pacific power" and was "not going anywhere".

Countering concerns from some countries about China's growing militancy in the South China Sea, Mr Hagel said the US had 200 warships and 360,000 personnel based in the Asia-Pacific region.

He said five of his country's seven treaty arrangements were with nations in this region including Australia.

"We had Marines on a rotational basis in Australia … we have LCS ship rotation in Singapore and we have just concluded new arrangements with the Philippines to use bases there," he said.

"Yes we are committed."

Senator Johnston said Australia was "delighted" with the increased US presence in the north.

Mr Hagel said there was a great opportunity for Australia to be part of the US ballistic missile defence system.

"We think there is great opportunity and possibility as we go forward and develop some options."

Senator Johnston said any upgrade to Australian warships and land based systems for ballistic missile defence would cost billions of dollars and was a "long, long" way off.

"What we have asked the Americans to do is to send a team over to scope out what the initial steps are in terms of acquisition … and sustainment of a credible ballistic missile defence system.

"It is not something you are going to see this decade."

Gable Tostee: Still looking for love

Qld police have identified a 26-year-old woman who died after falling from a high rise balcony yesterday.

GABLE Tostee is still looking for love on the dating app he used to meet Warriena Tagpuno Wright — even as he expresses "devastation'' at her mysterious death.

The 28-year-old Surfers Paradise man was logged on to his Tinder profile yesterday morning.

He used the same matchmaking application to organise a date with Miss Wright, 26, before she plunged to her death from his 14th floor balcony in the Avalon apartment building on Friday.

He left his apartment following the tragedy, turning himself in to police hours later but declining to speak with investigators.

He has not been charged with any offences.

While the Tinder profile does not give away many personal details, it does feature several photos of Mr Tostee.

Among them is a parody image of artist Michelangelo's famous piece Creation of Adam which Mr Tostee has edited to include his face and large genitalia.

He also describes himself as being 190cm tall and weighing 90kg.

But while he has not spoken to police, Mr Tostee has broken his silence on an online bodybuilding forum.

"I've been advised not to go into details but all I will say is that I absolutely did NOT cause this girl to fall and that I am devastated about what happened to her," a poster wrote under the name GT, accompanied by a picture of Mr Tostee.

It seems Miss Wright was not Mr Tostee's first Tinder conquest, with GT boasting of 150 sexual escapades with different women.

"Fact is I've taken home probably about 150 girls from clubs over the last few years," he wrote.

"When you go out as often to the same places and get drunk and talk to girls you're bound to get noticed and hated on."

The member, who has been active since July 2004, has also previously posted screenshots of explicit Tinder messages featuring Mr Tostee's photo, going into graphic detail about his sexual encounters and describing his love of taking girls out on to his balcony.

Potts Lawyers, who are representing Mr Tostee, said they were aware of the posts but would not comment further or confirm if the account belonged to their client.

The posts were no longer visible on the site yesterday afternoon.

Mr Tostee attended Potts Lawyers in Southport yesterday afternoon with his mother Helene and father Gray around 1pm.

He ran from the offices into a waiting car about 3.30pm and his parents left 15 minutes later and did not speak to waiting media.

His lawyer would not comment on the reason for the meeting.

Grandfather says bring Aussie terror kids home now

The PM says images of a child holding a severed head is evidence of the danger posed by ISIL terrorists.

THE grandfather of a boy pictured holding up the severed head of a Syrian soldier has begged the government to help bring the seven-year-old and his siblings home.

"I'm scared for the children," truck driver Peter Nettleton said at his Panania home last night.

"What life are they going to have now?"

Mr Nettleton thought his jihadist son-in-law Khaled Sharrouf and daughter Tara had taken her five children, two girls and three boys, to Malaysia to stay with Sharrouf's sister while he fought in Syria.

Now the shocking photo Sharrouf posted on Twitter shows he has taken his family into the war zone. "Can't the government do something to pull these kids away from that man?" he asked.

Mr Nettleton, who has been estranged from his daughter for nine years, said he heard about the shocking photo while listening to the news on radio yesterday.

"That brought me to tears because I don't know how to handle it," he said. Mr Nettleton, who has remarried and has three daughters, said Tara cut off contact with him after she married her teenage sweetheart Sharrouf and converted to Islam.

"We made a decision a long time ago to part," he said.

"She made that decision easily. I don't know her boys. I don't know their names."

Tara met Sharrouf while they were students at Chester Hill High School and had their first child, a girl, when she was 17.

"She just went with him and converted, she never grew up religious, we weren't religious," Mr Nettleton said.

Despite shocking evidence that his grandchildren are with their Islamist fighter father, Mr Nettleton was still not sure if his daughter was with her husband. Sharrouf, a convicted terrorist, snuck out of Australia late last year using his brother's passport.

Khaled Sharrouf / Picture: Supplied Source: Supplied

Mr Nettleton said he believed his daughter left Australia with the children at the same time: "Tara's mother told me she went to Malaysia after Khaled left to stay with Khaled's sister. She told her mother she would be coming back within the month."

Mr Nettleton said his ex-wife Karen remained close to her daughter.

Ms Nettleton would not answer the door of her Peakhurst home yesterday. "I don't want to say anything," she called in a quavering voice.

Khaled Sharrouf's sister-in-law also refused to speak to The Daily Telegraph.

The Sharroufs still living in Sydney have become reclusive in the months since Khaled's shocking jihad came to light.

Neighbour Joel, who said he would be moving from the area after learning about the extremist family, told The Daily Telegraph once-regular visitors had dried up.

Schapelle why haven’t you got a job?

Channel TEN is set to air an exclusive interview with Schapelle Corby's former cell mate during its 5pm news program.

A month after being sacked by the Cronulla Sharks, exiled NRL star Todd Carney has been photographed in Bali with convicted drug smuggler Schapelle Corby and her sister Mercedes Corby.

SCHAPELLE Corby has told parole officers that she is yet to begin working and has been reading books and visiting the beach.

And she has been admonished for attempting to cover her face with a scarf at her monthly check-in at the Denpasar parole board offices — in sharp contrast to her recent public pose alongside footballer Todd Carney.

Parole officer Ketut Sukiati, who spent about 10 minutes with Corby, said she had asked her why she had covered her face. Corby had replied that the media was trying to photograph her.

"I told her that it is not polite to cover her face like that, especially because she is in the Government office,' Ms Sukiati told News Corp Australia.

Ms Sukiati said Corby had told her she was still living at the home of her brother-in-law, Wayan Widyartha, and had not yet started working, instead spending her time reading books and going to the beach.

She also met briefly with the Bali parole board chief, Ketut Artha and the two exchanged pleasantries in Indonesian.

Ms Sukiati said Corby had not explained why she was not working yet but ensured her that she was not bored.

It is now six months since Corby was released from Kerobokan jail on parole.

She and sister Mercedes were photographed recently partying with Carney who was on holiday in Bali, following his latest indiscretion in Australia which saw him lose his contract with the Cronulla Sharks.

Those photographs were in contrast to Monday's visit to the parole office when she attempted to hide her face from the media with a black scarf.

Corby arrived at the office on the back of a motorbike driven by an unknown male.

She is required to report each month to the parole office and prosecutors, who monitor her progress on parole.

Corby must remain in Bali and on parole until her sentence expires in 2017.

What’s wrong with this picture?

Moira Geddes chats with Australian Red Cross CEO Robert Tickner about the organisation a century on.

OK so their crosses are white, not red ... An example of how the Red Cross symbol is often misused. Source: ThinkStock

IT'S one of the most familiar symbols in the world. But is it becoming a bit too familiar?

The Red Cross, a symbol synonymous with humanitarian and medical aid, is being misused by a range of individuals and companies.

It might be a medical or veterinarian centre wrongly using the cross.

This is so wrong ... The Red Cross has nothing to do with this. Picture: Supplied Source: NewsComAu

Or something outside the medical realm like an appliance fix-it business. It might even be something as simple, not to mention saucy, as a naughty nurse outfit.

Wrong again ... Something has to be done to rptioect the Red Cross's wonderful reputation. Source: NewsComAu

Whatever the case, Australian Red Cross officials warn that any time the Red Cross is misused, it potentially jeopardises everything the iconic symbol stands for.

Really, really, really wrong ... Cashing in on a symbol synonymous with humanitarian and medical aid. Source: NewsComAu

"The Red Cross basically means 'don't shoot'," says Phoebe Wynn-Pope, Director of International Humanitarian Law and Movement Relations at the Australian Red Cross.

"It means that this person or building or vehicle or whatever is not part of the fight. It is a neutral entity providing medical or humanitarian assistance."

This week is the 100th anniversary of the Australian Red Cross. The Australian chapter formed at the outbreak of World War I.

WORLD WAR I: The five key moments that brought conflict

WAR DIARIES: 100 Years of Untold Stories

One of the focuses of this week's centenary celebrations is to promote awareness of the importance of the symbol. The Australian Red Cross says its emblem has come to mean health care to many people, however it specifically means humanitarian aid in war and emergency zones.

This is right . The Red Cross at work. Source: Supplied

"People don't understand what the Red Cross actually means," Wynn-Pope explains. "We find again and again that people are quite surprised when we tell them."

The Australian Red Cross is constantly dealing with people who misuse the symbol, unaware they were doing the wrong thing.

"We find in Australia that if someone misuses it is not such a drastic thing. But if we think of someone in Syria misusing the emblem, there can then be real confusion about what the symbol means. We can't afford even in peacetime to misuse it."

Wynn-Pope's advice to anyone thinking of using the Red Cross symbol is to think twice.

"It's actually illegal to use the symbol. Its use is protected by the Geneva Convention."

Play Doh Red Crosses are acceptable. Source: News Corp Australia

Founded in the 19th century by Swiss businessman Henry Dunant, the Red Cross uses as its symbol an inverse representation of the Swiss flag, which features a white cross on a red background. The Red Cross is often misinterpreted as the Christian cross, which is not the case.

Today, the Red Crescent is used by 33 countries instead of the Cross symbol. Both organisations are part of the same body, known as the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. A new symbol, the Red Crystal, has also recently been approved.

Kendall ‘threw cash at waitress’ face’

Diva in the making ... Kendall Jenner is said to have thrown a tantrum after being refused alcohol. Source: Getty Images

KENDALL Jenner allegedly stormed out of a New York restaurant after the 18-year-old was refused alcohol.

The reality show star was with her best friend (and daughter of Stephen Baldwin), Hailey Baldwin, when waitress Blaine Morris says the two left without paying the $US60 ($65) they owed or leaving a tip.

Apparently, Jenner was unhappy when "the staff wouldn't serve her [alcohol] because she's underage," a source told the New York Post .

"Kendall got up and left and didn't pay for all the food … about $60 worth, and without a tip."

According to the Post, Ms Morris chased the model down the street only to have an annoyed Jenner throw money in her face. "Kendall and Hailey started laughing," a witness said.

"Kendall took a couple of $20 bills out of her wallet, threw them at the server and walked away, not even counting if it was enough or if it included a tip."

Ms Morris then tweeted, "That horrible moment you chase a Kardashian down the street because she forgot to pay her bill to be thrown money in your face."

A rep for Jenner has yet to comment, but a Baldwin rep said, "They thought everything was paid for. Kendall was polite and asked 'Does this cover it?' They didn't run."

Aussie couple ‘knew of surrogate son’

Written By Unknown on Senin, 04 Agustus 2014 | 23.18

An Australian couple left their Down Syndrome baby with his surrogate mother in Thailand, while taking the boys healthy twin sister. WSJs Ramy Inocencio talks to Sam Everingham, director of Families Through Surrogacy, on the backlash in Australia.

THE Australian husband in the Thailand surrogacy row has served a sentence in jail for indecently dealing with a child under 13, it has been claimed.

Channel Nine reported that the man, who lives in Western Australia, was convicted of indecent dealing with a child under the age of 13 in 1998 and served a prison sentence.

The development came as the Thai mother of the abandoned surrogate baby boy with Down syndrome, Gammy, rejected claims his Australian parents knew nothing of their son.

MOIRA'S PLEA: Kelly pleas for Gammy to be treated in Melbourne

The biological parents of seven-month-old Gammy are accused of leaving him in Thailand after he and his healthy twin sister were born to a local surrogate.

His sister was brought back to Australia.

The couple, who have not been identified but live in Western Australia, deny the allegations and claim they had no knowledge of a second child.

Gammy's 21-year-old Thai surrogate mother, Pattaramon Chanbua, is now his full-time carer and says those claims are wrong.

"This is not the truth," she told ABC's 7.30 program.

Ms Chanbua said the Australian couple asked her to abort the boy after he was diagnosed with Down syndrome in the womb.

She cried, refused and told them she would take care of both the babies if they did not want them. They eventually agreed to take the girl.

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison today labelled Ms Chanbua a "saint" and an "absolute hero" and said the outpouring of support was a strong indicator of the way Australians felt about the situation.

Gammy's story could prompt the Australian government to look closer at surrogacy laws with the Department of Foreign Affairs already examining practices in Thailand.

Agencies were working with Thai officials on the broader surrogacy issues, the department said.

Mr Morrison said the legalities surrounding international surrogacy were "very, very, very murky" and regulations must be looked at carefully.

"Sure, there are lots of Australians who are desperate to be parents but that can never, I think, sanction what we have just seen here," he said.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has also said the case illustrates the pitfalls of international surrogacy.

Commercial surrogacy, where a woman is paid a fee to carry a child, is illegal in Australia.

However, if there is an agreement for the biological parents to cover just medical and other reasonable costs, the practice is legal.

Gammy's picture has been beamed around the world and has prompted donations of more than $200,000 to pay for his future in Thailand.

"Our hearts are filled with love for all the people around the world who have taken time out of their lives to give thought to Gammy," his donation page reads.

The donations meant Gammy could be moved to a private hospital with specialist care and Ms Chanbua promises all the funds will go to him, ABC reported.

"I will make sure all the money, every single Baht, is well spent for the best of the baby," she said.

She says even if his biological parents come back for him, she's now his mother.

"I will not allow them to come to take my baby away," she said.

"I love him."

ONE Israeli was killed and five others injured when an excavator rammed into a Jerusalem bus, turning it over before the driver was shot dead by police.

The incident took place on the seamline between east and west Jerusalem and came as Israel pressed a major military campaign in Gaza which has killed more than 1800 Palestinians.

Police said the excavator had overturned a bus, prompting two police officers who were in the vicinity to open fire, killing the driver and foiling what they described as a "terrorist attack".

Comm Games vs World Cup. Who won?

Hailed as the best ever Commonwealth Games, Glasgow 2014 celebrates the end of a memorable 20th edition with a colourful closing ceremony on Sunday. Sarah Toms reports.

IT'S been a busy old year for major sporting events.

We started with the Winter Olympics in February, there was the World Cup in June and July, and as you know, we've just had the Commonwealth Games.

So which event were you, our readers, most interested in?

We thought there'd be two meaningful ways to measure that. Firstly, the average daily readers. And secondly, the top-rating story for each event. (We didn't take overall numbers for each event into consideration because they all went for a different length of time.)

Anyway, drumroll… the event that you, the readers of Australia's Number One news site liked best?

The Commonwealth Games.

Around 196,000 of you logged on to news.com.au each day during the Games to read about Glasgow goings-on, while just 174,000 of you regularly tuned into the football festivities in Brazil. Not-so-snowy Sochi was a distant third with 120,000 readers per day.

The message is clear. Most Australians still believe that the Commonwealth Games are a relevant part of our quadrennial sporting scene, a stance many of you made clear in the comments section of our piece yesterday.

And the biggest story of the Games? No, it wasn't Sally Pearson's gold medal or anything in the pool. It was a moment of awkwardness rather than athletic awesomeness.

Give up? It was Thorpie's awkward interview with James Magnussen, Please Lord never again.

For the record, the biggest story during the Winter Olympics was the spat over athlete funding that helped derail "Chumpy" Pullin's gold medal tilt.

And the biggest World Cup story? Wait for it… a Chilean journalist flashing her breasts to celebrate a goal.

Interestingly, the highest-rating sport story during the World Cup period was not a football story, but a story from another code of football. We speak of former NRL star Todd Carney's bathroom adventures which were literally, in terms of reader numbers, bigger than Brazil.

MEGA penguins waddled the Earth

Giant ancestor ... Emperor penguins are the largest living species of the bird. Picture: Tessa Bickford Source: Supplied

WHEN you see them on nature shows waddling over the pack ice, or being tossed about in the rough Antarctic seas, the humble penguin seems locked in a David and Goliath struggle with the elements.

But go back 40 million years and it was a different story.

Back then scientists say a race of mega penguins that weighed in at 115kg and were as tall as people roamed the Earth.

The claim comes after the fossilised remains of a giant penguin were discovered on Seymour Island, just off the Antarctic, by a team from Argentina's La Plata Museum.

According to the Independent , scientists already knew about the existence of the species, known as Palaeeudyptes klekowskii, but until the discovery of the latest fossil they did not realise the massive size of the creature.

Scientists say the penguin would have been more than 2m from beak tip to toe, or 1.6m tall standing with its beak down. By comparison the largest living species of penguin, the Emperor, grows to around 1.1m.
