Apple to unveil new smartwatch

Apple will attempt to take over the smartwatch sector with the release of the Apple Watch on Monday, but will consumers buy it? Phil Furey reports.

APPLE CEO Tim Cook today will do what Apple fans have been wanting for years: tell them when they can buy the first all-new Apple product since the launch of the iPad.

At a much-hyped event at the Yerba Beuna Centre in San Francisco, which will be streamed live here, Apple is expected to give details of the Apple Watch release, from the price to when it goes on sale around the world.

Australians have already fallen in love with the Watch, with a new Pureprofile survey finding that more than one in 25 of us plan to buy the new product this year.

There are a few things we already know about the Apple Watch. It comes in three models (Watch, Watch Sport and Watch Edition) and two sizes: 38mm and 42mm.

But there are many things we don't know yet, from the pricing of the options to the battery life.

There are rumours that Apple has been working on improving the Watch since it's first public unveiling in September, with tweaks including extending the battery life and improving the waterproofing.

In just a few hours (4am AEDT), Tim Cook will tell all. And Apple fans around the world can hardly wait.
