QANTAS has put the brakes on a Facebook scam using the airline's official logo to get personal and financial details from victims.

The promotional banners invited people to "like" them and share with friends in order to win a prize of a $1500 travel voucher.

Those who clicked on the page were then taken to an imitation Qantas Facebook page where they were asked to provide personal details.

A Qantas spokeswoman said the scam had nothing to do with the airline.

"Our campaigns are always run from our authenticated Facebook page — identified by its authorised blue tick, or through the official Qantas website," said the spokeswoman.

"Individuals who encounter the page are advised not to provide personal details.

"If unsure, we encourage you to get in touch with Qantas to confirm before divulging any information."

She said Qantas had already had a number of the scam pages removed.

"Facebook have been advised of the scam and are investigating," the spokeswoman said.

The latest promotion claims to be a "birthday" celebration — even though Qantas does not mark its anniversary until November.

It comes as the official Qantas Facebook page runs a competition offering a chance to win a seat on the inaugural A380 flight from Sydney to Dallas Fort Worth on September 29.

Similar Facebook scams have also targeted other airlines, including Jetstar.

Facebook users are urged to read the advice posted Australian Competition and Consumer Commission's SCAMwatch website, where suspected scams can be reported.
