THE mayor of Sochi, host city for the Winter Olympics, says there are no gay people in the city.

Anatoly Pakhomov, a member of President Vladimir Putin's United Russia party, was asked by the BBC whether gay people had to hide their sexuality in Sochi.

"No, we just say that it is your business, it's your life. But it's not accepted here in the Caucasus where we live. We do not have them in our city," he said.

When challenged, the mayor admitted that he was not certain there were no gay people in Sochi: "I am not sure, but I don't bloody know them."

Opposition leader Boris Nemtsov jumped on the comments, pointing out that there are two gay bars in Sochi.

"As far as I know there are several gay clubs in Sochi," Mr Nemtsov said. "How do they survive? Why they are not bankrupt?"

Meanwhile, it appears that there are no gays allowed at Winter Olympics sponsor Coca-Cola either.

The company has come under fire for banning the word 'gay' being printed on the side of its cans by people wanting to personalise their drink in a South African promotion.

That is bad news for the likes of track and field star Tyson Gay and actress Marcia Gay Harden.

Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin said homosexuals would be welcome in Sochi for the Olympics but said, "just leave the children alone".
