Free airport parking, but there's a catch

Flightcar lets travellers rent their cars so they don't have to pay for airport parking.

THERE'S no doubt airport parking fees can pack a punch.

Parking for the day at either Melbourne or Sydney airports' domestic car parks will cost $56. Going by train isn't much better – with a return ticket to Sydney domestic airport to the city costing $31.80 – then you've still got to get home from there.

So it's not surprising travellers are desperate to save money on airport fees.

In San Francisco a new company is hoping to help travellers do just this – but there's a catch – you'll have to share your car.

The valet service FlightCar offers travellers the chance to park for free at the airport, but you have to let someone else drive your car while you're away, ABC7 reported.

The cars are rented to tourists at prices much less than what the big hire car companies charge.

FlightCar co-founder Shri Ganeshram said it works like Airbnb, which allows people to rent their houses out.

"I think people have started to become more open to sharing," Mr Ganeshram said. "Our pricing strategy is to just be the cheapest, so take whatever you see and likely the FlightCar price is going to be 20 to 50 per cent off of that."

The cars must not look trashed. They must be made in this century, have under 241,400 kilometres on the clock and have no parts held up by duct tape!

Travellers who rent out their car can get a $10 fuel card, and a free wash.

While it currently only operates in San Francisco, it could come to other cities – and hopefully countries – if it's a success.
